How we ranked the best canal tours

Our writer Lisa van der Berg has lived in Amsterdam her whole life and took every tour on this list at least once — some in summer, some in the shoulder season, some on weekday mornings and Saturday afternoons. She evaluated each one on five criteria: punctuality, boat comfort and cleanliness, quality of audio guides or live commentary, ease of boarding, and whether the experience was worth the price. No free tickets, no sponsored content.

1. Lovers Canal Cruises — Best overall

Lovers is the answer to 'which canal tour should I take?' when you don't know much about the person asking. It covers all the main canals, the boats are clean and comfortable, the audio guides work well in 21 languages, and the boarding process at Damrak is well-organised. Not the cheapest, not the most intimate, but consistently good. From €18, 75 minutes, departs every 30 minutes in high season.

  • Audio guides in 21 languages including English
  • Reliable, punctual departures
  • Full route covering all major sights
  • Family-friendly with children's pricing

2. Stromma Candlelight Cruise — Best romantic experience

If you're visiting Amsterdam with a partner, the Candlelight Cruise is the one tour on this list we'd call genuinely special. It departs after sunset, keeps group sizes small (max 40), and serves wine and cheese on board. The city looks completely different from the water at night — quieter, more beautiful, with the lit bridges reflected in the canals. Book well in advance. From €29, 75 minutes.

3. Blue Boat Company — Best value

Blue Boat is the honest budget pick. At €16 for a complete 60-minute tour, it's the lowest price on the market. The boats are older and the experience is no-frills, but the route covers the same sights as anyone else and the guides are friendly. For solo travellers, large families, or first-timers on a tight budget, Blue Boat is the right call.

4. Rederij Paping — Best for families

Shorter route (55 min), calmer boats, and lower prices make Rederij Paping the standout for families with young children. Children under 4 travel free. The boats are comfortable and the pace is relaxed — no rushing through commentary, no overcrowding. From €15.

5. Wetlands Safari — Most unique

Not the classic canals — this tour heads out of the city and into the green wetlands north of Amsterdam. Reed beds, herons, centuries-old wooden farmhouses half-submerged in water. If you've seen Amsterdam before and want something genuinely different, this is it. 3 hours, English-guided, small groups. From €25.
