Who is Blue Boat Company?

Blue Boat Company is one of Amsterdam's most popular mid-size canal tour operators. They offer competitive pricing — typically €2 below Lovers — while covering the same UNESCO-listed canal route. Boats depart from the Stadhouderskade dock near the Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein, making Blue Boat the best starting point if you're already on the museum strip or staying in the Jordan or De Pijp neighbourhoods. Fleet: glass-topped canal boats, capacity around 110 passengers.

The route — what you'll see

Blue Boat's standard route covers all three main canal rings: Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht. Highlights include the Anne Frank House exterior, the Golden Bend, the Magere Brug, and views of the Jordaan neighbourhood. The western departure from the Rijksmuseum area also gives you a perspective on the Singelgracht and the city's outer canal ring before entering the historic centre.

  • Anne Frank House exterior and Prinsengracht
  • The Golden Bend — Amsterdam's grandest patrician canal houses
  • Magere Brug — the narrow drawbridge over the Amstel
  • Jordaan neighbourhood views from the water

Audio guide quality

Blue Boat offers an audio guide in 19 languages via a handheld device. The English version is solid and covers the main sights without being dry — similar in quality to Lovers, though slightly shorter in commentary depth. The German version is equally serviceable. In our test the device worked without issues throughout the tour.

Boarding experience — tips from our test

The Stadhouderskade departure point near the Rijksmuseum is well-marked and easy to reach on foot or by tram. It tends to be less crowded than the Damrak departure used by Lovers, partly because it draws from a different part of the city. Arrive 10 minutes before departure. Walk-up tickets are generally available, but book online if you're travelling in July or August.

  • Departure near Rijksmuseum — ideal if you're on the museum strip
  • Less crowded boarding than Damrak-based operators
  • Walk-up usually possible outside high season
  • Tram stop Leidseplein or Rijksmuseum are both within walking distance

Blue Boat vs Lovers — which should you choose?

At €16, Blue Boat is the better deal if budget matters. The route and duration are virtually identical. Lovers edges ahead on audio guide depth and departure frequency (every 30 min vs 30–45 min for Blue Boat). But if you're staying near the Rijksmuseum, Blue Boat's location is a practical advantage. Our verdict: Blue Boat is the best value canal tour in Amsterdam for visitors who want the full sightseeing experience without paying extra.
