Schiphol Airport is 17 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal Station by direct train. That single fact opens up a world of possibilities for transit passengers. We've done the layover-to-canal-cruise trip ourselves to give you an accurate time breakdown.
The minimum viable layover
Allow 4.5 hours from gate to gate for a comfortable experience. Here's the math:
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Exit aircraft + passport control | 20–30 min |
| Train to Centraal Station | 17 min |
| Walk to canal dock (Damrak) | 8 min |
| Blue Boat 60-min cruise | 60 min |
| Walk back to station | 8 min |
| Train to Schiphol | 17 min |
| Security + gate | 45–60 min |
| Total | ~3h 45 min |
This works with a 4-hour layover if things go smoothly. For a more comfortable experience, 5–6 hours is ideal.
Transport: Schiphol to the canal docks
Train (recommended): Direct Intercity service, every 10 minutes. Platform 1 or 3 in the airport basement. Buy tickets from the yellow NS machines — use a contactless card or the NS app. Do not use the Thalys/international platforms by mistake.
Cost: €4.90 single, €9.80 return (2026 pricing).
Taxi: ~€40–50 and takes 30–45 minutes in traffic. Not recommended for layovers.
Which canal cruise to take
For a layover, book Blue Boat Company on the Damrak. The dock is 8 minutes' walk from Centraal Station. Departures every hour on the hour. 60 minutes. No audio guide headset faff — a real guide on board who speaks English. For a full breakdown of all operators and pricing, see our Amsterdam canal cruise overview.
Do not book the 75-minute Lovers tour if your layover is under 5 hours — the extra 15 minutes matters.
What to do with remaining time
If your layover is 6+ hours, you have time to add a 30-minute walk through the Jordaan neighbourhood (exit Centraal Station to the left, walk along the Brouwersgracht). This is Amsterdam at its quietest and most beautiful — narrow canals, brown cafés, no tram lines.

Luggage storage at Schiphol and Centraal
Schiphol: Luggage storage in the Departure Hall, near the main entrance. €8–12 per bag per day.
Centraal Station: Locker bank on the ground floor, west exit. €5–7 per locker per day. Convenient if you want to walk freely.
Important: Immigration and visas
If you hold a passport from outside the Schengen Area, leaving the airport requires going through immigration. This takes 20–40 minutes depending on queues and requires a valid visa for the Netherlands/Schengen. Plan extra time and verify your transit visa situation before booking anything.
Schiphol to City: Transport Options
The fastest option is the Intercity train (platforms 1–2, departing every 10–15 minutes, arriving Amsterdam Centraal in 17 minutes, price: €5.50). No reservation needed, no queues.
Alternative: Taxi or Uber costs €35–55 and takes 25–40 minutes in normal traffic.
For a canal tour on a layover schedule: Take the train. It goes directly to Centraal Station, from where all major boat docks are a 5–10 minute walk.
Luggage: What to Do?
Airport luggage storage: available in departure terminal 3, €7–10 per item. We've used this multiple times.
City storage: Stationhouses (multiple locations near Centraal Station) offers luggage storage for €7–9 per item per day.
Tip: Bring only a light bag to the canal tour. Large suitcases are awkward on the boats and a safety risk on wet gangways when boarding.
